Ohio Prenuptial Agreements

Ohio prenuptial agreements are often overlooked when couples are swept up in the excitement of love.

Why Ohio Prenuptial Agreements Matter

Is love truly blind? That’s the burning question at the center of Netflix’s smash reality series Love is Blind.

Ohio Prenuptial Agreements graphicThe premise of the show is simple: 15 single men and 15 single women enter soundproofed “pods” where they then “date” ach other without ever being able to see their potential companion. Stripped of their cellphones, the couples can only communicate with each other by speaking through a wall connecting the pods. After about a week or so, the remaining couples still interested in pursuing the relationship get engaged – sight unseen! Once engaged, the cast members then see their partners for the very first time in an emotional (and sometimes excruciatingly awkward) reveal. Provided the reveal doesn’t go too horribly and no one is too disgusted by the sight of their new fiancé, all engaged couples then head off on a lavish, honeymoon-type vacation to Mexico.

If the couples survive the faux honeymoon, they return home together and are plunged back into the cold reality of intimately living with someone they just met. Over the next four weeks, the couples live together and begin introducing friends, family, and pets to their new, soon-to-be spouse. The couples visit each other’s homes and apartments and observe their partner’s spending and cleanliness habits.

If the relationship is proceeding smoothly despite the adjustment period, the couples proceed with planning the wedding. Sometimes, the couples are able to quickly determine that they are not a good fit and the wedding is called off.

Love Is Blind and the Reality of Marriage

Love-blind graphicMost couples, however, decide to proceed with the wedding ceremony, which happens at the end of the four-week adjustment period. At the wedding ceremony, each person is given the opportunity to say “Yes” or “No” to the marriage. If both people say “Yes,” the couple is officially married. A solid majority of the Love is Blind couples, however, do not end up married because at least one person is unable to look past their partner’s shortcomings or their inability to fit into their lifestyle.

One of the more unique issues that sometimes arise between couples are discussions concerning prenuptial agreements. For some couples, the discussions concerning finances aren’t given much weight. For example, in Season 3, one of the couples, Brennon and Alexa Lemieux, jokingly brought up the topic because the wealth disparity between them was significant: Brennon came from a middle-class background and worked as a water treatment engineer while Alexa came from generational wealth and co-owned a business with her family.

While Brennon initially told Alexa to “put whatever she wanted in the contract and [he]’d sign it,”the couple ultimately decided not to sign a prenup because Alexa wasn’t interested in one. That may have been an unfortunate mistake, however, as the couple just recently filed for divorce after four years of marriage.

For other couples, signing a prenup before tying the knot is simply a pragmatic matter. After the conclusion of Season 7, one of the successfully married couples, Taylor Krause and Garrett Joseman, revealed that they had signed a prenuptial agreement before saying “yes” to each other.

Do Reality TV Couples Really Need Prenups?

Love-blind graphicIn a TikTok post, Taylor explained: “I just want people to think about a prenup as you as a couple deciding what your legal terms are rather than the government deciding because if you get a divorce [and] you don’t have a prenup, the government decides what that is.” She added: “I don’t think anyone plans to get divorced when they get married, and especially if you get married in a very unconventional way like on a reality show, being able to dictate the terms of your relationship in a legal way is smart. That’s why Garrett and I did it; we’re very much in alignment.” As Taylor and Garrett just happily celebrated one year of marriage, their joint decision to enter into a prenup clearly reflects their compatibility and respect for each other.

Should You Speak with an Ohio Prenuptial Agreement Lawyer? Conclusion:

A prenuptial agreement should be nonnegotiable for a show like Love is Blind.

However, even for couples who pursue a more traditional method of marriage, signing a prenuptial agreement can be a wise and sensible decision. As Season 7’s Taylor Krause pointed out, a prenuptial agreement is a good way to provide financial security and peace of mind for both partners entering into a marriage.

Whether love is blind or built over time, Ohio prenuptial agreements remain one of the smartest legal steps couples can take before marriage.
