A Baby Boomer Phenomenon? Exploring Gray Divorce in Ohio

Gray Divorce in Ohio Rates Among Baby Boomers

In my practice as an Ohio divorce attorney, I continue to see more and more older couples pursuing what is often called a gray divorce in Ohio.. It seems like this is a good time to post an update on this topic. My last article was on May 4, 2024, which also included links to 5 previous posts of ours on this trend.

A “gray divorce” is a divorce after the age of 50. In Ohio, divorce among those 65 and older has skyrocketed within the past few decades. According to a 2024 report conducted by the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), the share of divorce rates among adults age 65 and older has nearly tripled since 1990. Interestingly, the research also demonstrates that divorce rates among those aged 50 to 64 slightly declined in 2022, indicating that gray divorce is more common among the baby boomer generation, or those born between the years 1946 and 1964.… View Full Article → “A Baby Boomer Phenomenon? How the 3 C’s of Divorce Can Help You Uncouple Peacefully

It is no secret that divorce tends to be a highly stressful process. Following the 3 C’s of Divorce can make the process less stressful, less costly, and may even speed up the process.

1. Communication: A Core Principle of the 3 C’s of Divorce

Communication skills often impact one’s ability to negotiate. In her article, Rebecca Todd shares that “understanding how we communicate and what impact that can have on how we negotiate can help us to be better negotiators with better outcomes”. Negotiation is a critical skill in any collaborative divorce settlement, since an agreement will need to be filed with the court when the divorce is finalized.

Poor communication also tends to lead to conflict and confusion. When parties are straightforward it is easier to understand each other’s goals and priorities. It is important to note that a divorce with more conflict tends to be more expensive and lengthy than a divorce where parties communicate well with one another and their attorney.… View Full Article → “The 3 C’s of Divorce: What They Are and How They Can Help You Uncouple Peacefully!”

About Ohio Child Support with a Link to the Ohio Child Support Calculator Tool

The Ohio Child Support Calculator helps parents quickly estimate payments based on their income and family situation.

How the Ohio Child Support Calculator Works

Child support payments play a crucial role in supporting families and ensuring the well-being of children. This financial support helps cover essential expenses for children, such as housing, food, clothing, healthcare, and education. Further, determining and paying child support can provide an opportunity for parents to develop co-parenting skills and demonstrate empathetic communication during and after divorce. The financial and emotional impact of child support ensures that children maintain a good quality of life and have a sense of stability throughout the divorce and after.

Determining child support can seem daunting to parents going through a divorce. There are a multitude of factors that influence how much support is to be paid, such as how many children the parties have, the parties’ incomes, whether each parent has other children, the amount of spousal support paid, how health care and other extraneous child care costs are divided, and more.… View Full Article → “About Ohio Child Support with a Link to the Ohio Child Support Calculator Tool”

Love Is Blind: The Importance of Ohio Prenuptial Agreements!

Ohio prenuptial agreements are often overlooked when couples are swept up in the excitement of love.

Why Ohio Prenuptial Agreements Matter

Is love truly blind? That’s the burning question at the center of Netflix’s smash reality series Love is Blind.

The premise of the show is simple: 15 single men and 15 single women enter soundproofed “pods” where they then “date” ach other without ever being able to see their potential companion. Stripped of their cellphones, the couples can only communicate with each other by speaking through a wall connecting the pods. After about a week or so, the remaining couples still interested in pursuing the relationship get engaged – sight unseen! Once engaged, the cast members then see their partners for the very first time in an emotional (and sometimes excruciatingly awkward) reveal. Provided the reveal doesn’t go too horribly and no one is too disgusted by the sight of their new fiancé, all engaged couples then head off on a lavish, honeymoon-type vacation to Mexico.… View Full Article → “Love Is Blind: The Importance of Ohio Prenuptial Agreements!”

Thinking About a “Golden Remarriage”? Should I Consider a Prenuptial Agreement First?

Do I Need a Prenuptial Agreement for a Golden Remarriage in Ohio?

Getting remarried later in life, also commonly referred to as a golden remarriage, or a second-chance romance is on the rise. Marriage for adults after age 60 may occur after the death of a spouse, or after a divorce, or after a life time of devoting oneself to a career and family. Older adults cite various reasons for remarrying. A golden remarriage prenuptial agreement is an important consideration for couples who are thinking about remarrying later in life.

Perhaps it is for the support of someone near their own age, or the concern of spending later years alone. It provides both companionship and intimacy and an increase in socialization. If you decide you want to remarry, congratulations! But before you walk down the aisle, there are many things to consider. Marriage at any age is a commitment, but getting married later in life has additional challenges that need to be addressed.… View Full Article → “Thinking About a “Golden Remarriage”? PUBLISHER’S UPDATE: Congratulations! We have all made it through Christmas and now New Year’s Eve is just a few days away. I have been considering what to post this week that was timely and relevant.
